Small game hunting

Croatia’s varied terrain supports a wide range of small game species: from pheasant and grey partridge on the arable lowlands of Slavonia, through rock partridge and quail on the rocky Adriatic slopes, to woodcock passing through the hinterland during the autumn and winter migration.

Pheasant hunting, driven or walked up, is available from 16 September to 31 January. Lowland hunts in Slavonia offer full hunting days with high bird numbers over dogs or on a drive, a classic and relaxed option for hunters who want a sociable, mixed day in the field.

Rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) hunting along the Adriatic coastal hills runs from 1 October to 28 February. It is done on foot with pointers over steep, rocky ground overgrown with Mediterranean scrub. The physical demand is real; the rewards, dramatic scenery and sharp, demanding shooting, are considerable.

Quail hunting is available from 21 August to 30 November, mainly on the harvested lowland fields of Slavonia and coastal farmland. Walked-up hunting over pointers offers fast, unpredictable shooting with high bird numbers in season.

Woodcock and common snipe are migratory species that pass through Croatia in significant numbers during autumn and winter. The woodcock season runs from 1 October to 28 February, and snipe from 16 October to 31 January. Coastal and riverine wetland habitats provide ideal conditions for both species during the peak migration periods.
